Fondazione 107 is pleased to present 12 Horses – Homage to Jannis Kounellis, by American installation-based painter Lara Nickel. The artist's large-scale project will premiere on October 19th, 2019 at Fondazione 107’s former factory space in Turin.

This exhibition marks the 50th anniversary of Arte Povera artist Jannis Kounellis’ 1969 Senza titolo (12 cavalli) installation, originally shown at Galleria L’Attico in Rome and the first exhibition of Lara Nickel’s work in Italy.

Perhaps the best known piece of Arte Povera and of Jannis Kounellis, Senza titolo (12 cavalli) consisted of twelve living horses tethered to the walls of a gallery – one of the most radical and influential post-war works of art.

Lara Nickel's homage is comprised of twelve life-size paintings of horses, all painted realistically with white backgrounds. Her paintings are displayed in a similar manner to Kounellis’ live horses: positioned on the ground and installed perpendicularly to the wall in Fondazione 107. Installed in this non-traditional way, the images of horses appear to be standing in the room, making the architectural space itself the setting of the paintings.

Not all of the paintings are clearly visible from the front of the room, engaging viewers to physically enter the space. 12 Horses – Homage to Jannis Kounellis is to be experienced; the paintings become a figurative sculptural intervention, its audience navigating the canvases placed within the exhibition site: a sensual, interactive participation with painting.

Using Kounellis' original piece as an art historical reference, Nickel’s paintings are not only portraits of horses but painting-as-illusion, painting-as-object, and painting-as-situation.

Fondazione 107 is honored to present 12 Horses – Homage to Jannis Kounellis in Turin, one of the historical birthplaces of the Arte Povera movement.

A trilingual (English-Italian-French) fully illustrated publication for 12 Horses – Homage to Jannis Kounellis by Skira Editore will accompany the exhibition - including texts by Germano Celant, Alex Bacon, José Jiménez and Lara Nickel.

Please join us for the opening reception on October 19, 5-8pm.
