This horse is one of twelve life-size paintings from Lara Nickel's monumetal installation, 12 Horses – Homage to Jannis Kounellis. Presented in a non-traditional way (positioned on the ground and installed perpendicularly to the wall), the images of the horses appear to be standing in the room, making the architecture itself the setting of the paintings. Nickel’s 12 Horses – Homage to Jannis Kounellis uses painting as a sculptural intervention, inviting the audience to physically engage with the artwork. Using Kounellis’ original piece as an art historical reference, Nickel’s paintings are not only portraits of horses but painting-as-illusion, painting-as-object, and painting-as-situation.

Quoad de Saire is a Selle Français stunt horse from the famous French military riding academy, the Cadre Noir, in Saumur, France (founded in Versailles before transferring to Saumur in 1828). It is one of the "Big Four", the most prestigious classical riding academies in the world. The historic role of the Saumur Cavalry School was to provide training for the officers and non-commissioned officers of the French cavalry. The style of equitation characteristic of the Cadre Noir was first taught by François Robichon de La Guérinière, the French riding master to King Louis XV in 1731.
